You're awake. You can't move. There's someone coming. You're lying on a metal table, arms and legs fastened by leather straps. There's a bright light above you. Muffled footsteps are approaching. Moments later a door opens, a man enters and walks over to you. [[He starts to speak.->Man Speaks]]"I wasn't expecting you to be awake so soon. How do you feel?" 1. "[[I'm fine.->Mute]]" 2. Unsure if garbled noises are attempts at communication, but subject appears useless regardless." "What the fuck are you talking about?" [[You yell.->Mute death]] But he's not paying attention to you anymore. He walks out of sight behind you and the table begins to move. You are being wheeled out of the room along a white corridor. All the while you're shouting at him to give you an explanation, but he ignores you while you struggle at your restraints. You arrive at what looks like a trash chute. Suddenly, you feel a sharp pain in your neck. Your body starts to go numb and your eyelids droop. The man has unfastened your leather straps now, but you don't have the power to move anymore. With a heave, he dumps you into the chute feet first. A few seconds later, you fall into a very dimly lit room, but don't feel any pain. As your tired eyes adjust to the darkness, you see you're on top of a pile of bodies. Every single one of them looks exactly the same. [[You can't keep your eyes open anymore.->Wake up 2]]The man writes something on his clipboard while speaking aloud. "Subject appears unable to comprehend or use language. Subject is useless." You start to think maybe you should've said something, and [[try speaking.->Mute death]]You're awake. You can't move. There's someone coming. You seem to be in some sort of laboratory. You're fastened to a metal table by leather straps. It's hard to see much of the room because the light above you is so bright. You hear the door to the room open, the rush of water at a sink, and then footsteps getting nearer. [[A man begins to speak.->Lame]]"Good, you're awake. How do you feel?" "Who are you?" You ask. "My name is Doctor Reinhardt, and I'll answer all your questions in due time," he smiles and notes something down on a clipboard. "But how do you feel? Any dizziness or nausea?" "No," you reply. "You're a doctor? Is this a hospital? I don't remember anything." You try to move but remember you're strapped down. Your mind races with questions. Why am I tied to the table? Have I done something wrong? “Yes, this is a hospital of sorts," says Doctor Reinhardt. "Don’t worry about the restraints, if everything is okay, I’ll remove them very soon. I’m just going to take a look at the rest of you. Do your best to relax.” He reaches above you and moves the light out of your face. It's on a swivel, and he passes it over you to get a better look. It's quite dark in the room otherwise. "Can you feel this?" He is prodding at your arms. You can. 1. "[[Yes.->Working arms]]" 2. "[[No.->Dead arms]]" "Good... How about this?" He is prodding at your chest now. You can feel this too. 1. "[[Yes.->Reinhardt]]" 2. "[[No.->Dead chest]]""Hmm... are you sure?" He says, prodding again. "Can you feel this?" 1. "[[Yes.->Working arms]]" 2. "[[No.->Lame death]]""Yes... I thought so. That's a shame," he notes something down on his clipboard, tucks it under his arm and pulls a syringe out of his pocket. "What's that?" you ask, but he doesn't reply. He just walks towards you with no emotion on his face. (if: (history:) contains "Dubious")[\ You shove yourself off the bed, hoping that somehow your legs will take your weight, but they don't. He's standing over you now, and although you're trying to drag yourself away with your arms, it's no use.] You feel a small sting as he injects something into your neck. Your vision blurs, but you squint and manage to make out what appears to be a knife strapped with black tape to the underside of the sink. [[You can't keep your eyes open anymore.->Wake up 3]]"Good," he says, noting something down again. Your eyes are adjusting properly now, and you can get a good look around the room. Doctor Reinhardt is fairly tall, has dark hair and is wearing a white lab coat. There’s not much in the room, just a sink and a chair in the corner. Everything is very clean, apart from the ceiling. There are some grubby marks up there. [[Wait, they're not just marks.->Ceiling]] "Are you certain?" He asks, prodding at you again. "Can you feel this?" 1. "[[Yes.->Reinhardt]]" 2. "[[No.->Lame death]]"It's writing. Someone has written something up there directly above you. You squint to make out the words. It says, “You are a clone. he will kill you if you are not perfect. I have hidden a knife beneath the sink. You must escape.” "Can you feel this?" Reinhardt asks. You barely notice the question as the words on the ceiling sink in. Are they true? "You can't feel this, can you?" He says, impatiently. You look down, and see that he's prodding at your leg now. The only problem is that you can't feel anything. You look up and read the words again. They'd be very hard to make out if you weren't looking for them. 1. "[[Er, yes. I can feel that.->Dubious]]" 2. "[[No, I can't.->Lame death]]" "Really?" He looks highly dubious. Doctor Reinhardt loosens the straps fastening you to the table. You can move your arms, but even though your legs are now free, you can't move them. They're just not responding to your commands. "Alright now, simply get up and walk in a straight line towards me," Reinhardt says, walking over to the door. You try with all your might to stand up, but nothing is happening. You try and lift them with your hands and swing them over the side of the bed, but you know that as soon as you put weight on them you'll collapse. "I'm waiting," he says. [[But you can't move.->Lame death]]You're awake. You can't move. There are people standing over you. "Look! Look! He's awake!" A man laughs gleefully. "That said it couldn't be done, but I did it!" "Remarkable," a woman is speaking now. "The world's first human clone. I wouldn't believe it I wasn't seeing it with my own eyes." What are they talking about? A human clone? Are they talking about you? That can't be true... but you can't remember anything before waking up just now. The man leans over you, obscuring the bright light shining in your face. Your eyes adjust and you can see he has dark hair and is wearing a lab coat. "Hello, I'm Doctor Reinhardt. Can you hear me?" You pause for a long moment, trying to figure out how to put your thoughts into words, "[[...yes.->Slow]]" Doctor Reinhardt beams up at the woman who has now moved next to him. She has red hair, wears glasses, and is wearing a lab coat too. "What do we do now?" She asks. "We ask questions, conduct a physical. Just make sure everything's okay," he turns back to me. "Do you know where you are." "...no," you reply after a short pause. "Do you know what you are?" "...you said... I'm a... clone." Doctor Reinhardt frowns. "What's wrong?" [[Asks the woman.->Too long]] "It's taking too long to respond," he says. "Well, it's only just woken up, maybe it needs time to adjust?" "No no... it's a clone. It should be an exact replica. All the body parts should be the same, including the brain. It should be able to talk and think normally. The only thing missing from the original should be the memories." 1. [[Keep listening.->Slow better]] 2. [[Try and talk faster.->Slow faster]]"No, no, no. I can do better," says Doctor Reinhardt. "You can do better? What are you talking about?" The woman asks. "You've just created the world's first human clone! So what if it's a little brain dead?" "Trust me, I can do better. I've got a pretty much endless supply of DNA to work with. I can perfect the process until it works properly." "Until it works properly? Sounds like you're going to have an army of clones by the end of this." "An army of clones? No, of course not, there's no reason to keep the failures around." "Wait, you're just going to kill it?" "... no... please," you stammer, but he's ignoring you, [[and keeps talking.->Slow death]] "... what's going... to... happen... to me?" You stammer and stutter your way through a sentence. That seems to be the best you can do. The doctor is ignoring you now, however. He's writing something down on a clipboard, [[muttering to himself.->Slow better]] "Why not?" He says. "You can't do that!" She says incredulously. "You may have just created it, but this is a life." "It's not a life, Shannon, it's a mistake. It's bad code. What would you suggest? Are you going to adopt it? I didn't think so. Now you can either trust me and follow your instructions, or you can find another job." You're still trying to protest, but you're not even sure you're making noise anymore. Shannon is staring open mouthed at Doctor Reinhardt. She looks down at me, then back up at him. "You won't get away with this," she says, before storming out of the room. Reinhardt sighs and turns towards you. You try and struggle against your restraints, but it's no use, they're too tight. He looks around the room as if searching for something before patting down his pockets. He shrugs and then clasps his hands around your throat. You try and kick out, you try and rock the table so it falls over, but nothing is working. Your vision blurs around the edges and everything starts to get darker. [[You can't keep your eyes open anymore.->Wake up 4]]You're awake. You're absolutely terrified. Where the hell are you? Who is that? This place doesn't look safe at all. You're lying on a metal table with a bright light shining down on you. It's like a surgical theatre but there aren't any surgical tools. You're strapped down. This can't be good. The door to the room opens. 1. "[[Please let me out.->Frightened]]" 2. "[[Where am I?!->Frightened]]" 3. "[[God help me.->Frightened]]" "Okay, okay, calm down," says the man. Then under his breath he continues, "I can see this one isn't going to go well already." "Please, you have to let me out," you blurt out," I shouldn't be here. What's going on?" "Look, remain calm okay? Everything's alright, I'm just going to take a quick look at you and make sure you're all fine. I'm Doctor Reinhardt." "You're a doctor?" "That's right, just remain still, I'm going to try some things." Phew, he's a doctor. But wait, why am I strapped to the table? 1. [[Close your eyes and breathe, everything's going to be fine.->Frightened fine]] 2. [[Struggle against your restraints.->Frightened death]] Doctor Reinhardt pokes and prods at you, and nods every now and then while making notes on his clipboard. He seems quite happy. "So I'm okay, doctor?" "Yes, it looks that way, just open your eyes for me so I can get a look at them. Just to make sure if they dilate properly." You open your eyes and the light shining down on you has been moved away. Your eyes adjust and you can see Reinhardt has dark hair, and is wearing a white lab coat. He's leaning over you looking into your eyes. He looks a little scary, but he does seem to be trying to help you. "Well okay then, everything looks in order." He smiles and stands up straight. As he does so, you have a full view of the ceiling above you. At first you thought they were just dirty marks, but on second glance you can see there's writing up there. Your blood runs cold as you [[read the words.->Frightened death]] (if: (history:) contains "Frightened fine")[\ "You are a clone. he will kill you if you are not perfect. I have hidden a knife beneath the sink. You must escape"] You start to panic and shake, pulling against your restraints. Reinhardt frowns down at you and shakes his head. "I knew it," he mutters to himself, before taking a syringe out of his pocket. "Please no," you beg him, but there's nothing you can do. He injects something into your neck, and your senses start to dull and your vision blurs. You think you're being wheeled out of the room on the table, and then the world seems to turn upside down as you are dumped through a chute. You fall into a dark room and become entangled among the limbs of a few dead bodies. The bodies are the last thing you see, and your last feeling is one of confusion as they all look exactly the same. [[You can't keep your eyes open anymore.->Wake up 5]]You're awake. It's the start of another day. Your bedroom is pretty small. A single bed up against one wall, a desk up against the opposite wall. Instead of a window you have a poster with a nice landscape on it which you change from time to time. You get up, make your bed, and sit patiently on your chair, waiting for your door to unlock. At 8:45 sharp, just like always, [[you hear a click.->Assistant]] You know you have to be ready for work by 9:00. Once you were late by two minutes, and Doctor Reinhardt threatened to "throw you in with the others." You haven't been late since. (set: $time to 15) You have $time minutes to get ready. All you know is that every day, when a clone doesn't meet the doctor's standards, it's killed and dumped into the basement. Every time this happens, it's like a little piece of you is dying with them. You hate Doctor Reinhardt for that. (set: $time -= 2) You have $time minutes to get ready, what do you want to do? There's a single telephone in Doctor Reinhardt's office, but even if you could get to it, you've never been able to speak. You try, but no words come out. Soon enough, [[the doctor enters.->Assistant death 2]]You rarely come to the canteen because you don't need to eat. You could try and sneak up on Doctor Reinahrdt, but he would surely see you. There's nowhere to hide, and he's so much stronger than you are. That's why he took you on as his assistant, and why he lets you roam freely. You could barely fight your way out of a paper bag. What if you could somehow hide it for the next clone to use? Yes! You [[rush to your bedroom.->Assistant bedroom]](set: $time -= 1)\ You only have $time minutes before you have to be at work, you have to hurry. You rip the poster off the wall, tear off the tape and stuff it in your pocket. Then you pick up a black pen off your desk, and [[rush to the lab.->Assistant lab]]You have everything you need, and you've figured out a way to hide it so Reinhardt won't notice it. You strap the knife to the bottom of the sink using the tape you picked up. Next, you lie down on the empty metal table, as if you were a new clone. You pick out the spot on the ceiling directly above the table. You take out your pen, and stand on the table, but the ceiling is too high. (set: $time -= 1) You realise you only have $time minutes before Reinhardt arrives at the lab. You jump down off the table, grab the chair in the corner of the room, and place it on the table so you can get up higher. You manage to catch your breath before Doctor Reinhardt [[enters the room.->Assistant death]] Doctor Reinahrdt barely acknowledges you as he enters the room. Before you can react he punches you right on the bridge of your nose, sending you sprawling to the floor. Blood streams down your face, but you can't do anything to stem the flow as he kicks you in your ribs. You know you're going to die, you only hope that someone sees your message and can do something about it. You [[close your eyes->Wake up 6]] and take the beating until you can't feel the pain anymore. You're awake. You're starting to remember. For a few minutes, everything is a blur. You're confused. But then your thoughts start to form into individual memories. Eventually you piece the story of dozens of clones together, and you feel the pain of every single one of them meeting their death. Not everything is clear to you yet, but you remember enough. You know what you have to do. You just hope your body is able enough. [[Doctor Reinhardt enters.->Final doctor]]The doctor looks tired. "Alright, what do we have today?" He performs all of the usual tests on you, and you pass with flying colours. This perks him up a bit. He murmurs approving noises while he makes notes. Doctor Reinhardt [[loosens your straps.->Final free]]You don't want to risk anything yet though. "Okay now I'm going to stand by the door, and I want you to get up and walk in a straight line to me," says Reinhardt. You swing your legs over the side of the metal table, and stand up. Slowly, one step at a time, you make your way towards the doctor. You keep your eyes focused on him, but really you're just waiting until you're close enough to the sink to make a dash for the knife. You're nearly there. [[Now's your chance.->Doctor kill]]You're just a few steps away from the sink, so you make a dash for it. You wrench the knife free from the underside of the sink and, with the tape still attached and flapping around, charge at Doctor Reinhardt, screaming. He has barely had a chance to react, but still manages to parry your first slash by hitting your arm to the side. Reinhardt tries to grab you, but he's not ready for you swinging the knife back the other way. You catch him in the side of his face. He winces and clutches at his open wound, leaving him open to another attack. Memories of murder and brutality flash across your mind as you decide what to do. You can either [[kill him->Kill him]], and end this here and now. Or you can [[subdue him-> Subdue him]] and try and find someone else to help you. There must be other people around. Shannon looks horrified at the scene in front of her. She looks down at the dead doctor, and then up at you. Her face turns from terror to anger. "You've resorted to just using a knife now? What number is that? Well this is the last time, Reinhardt." Suddenly you remember. How could you have been so stupid? You had been so blinded by what he had done that you forgot to think things through. Where did you think he was getting his endless supply of DNA from? He was using his own DNA to create clones in his own image. You knew that, but you just couldn't form the memory of it. Now he's dead, you're covered in blood, and you're wearing his clothes.
