<html><IMG SRC="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8600/16715394712_4f64b081d6_b.jpg"></html> World War One is over. After ruling the Middle East for centuries, the Ottoman Empire has been defeated, and European armies are in control of the region. Woodrow Wilson, setting the terms for world peace at Versailles, needs to send out a commission to help him figure out what should be done with this politically sensitive, religiously important and culturally diverse region. Are you up for the task? <html><IMG SRC="http://www.jewishmag.com/169mag/king-crane-report/title.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 2em; margin-right: 1em;"></html> Yes? Good. Filled with confidence and an American can-do spirit you are certain that straightening out the future of the Middle East is something you can handle. If you choose to be a wealthy plumbing parts magnate, outspoken anti-semite and slightly-too-large-pith-helmet enthusiast, click here to [[Travel around the Region]] as Charles Crane.<html><IMG SRC="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8600/16715394712_4f64b081d6_b.jpg"></html> You have a lovely time traveling around the Levant, meeting with delegations of locals in their quaint regional garb and accepting their petitions on a diverse array of subjects. British General Allenby entertains you on his yacht and some women even give you a hand-woven carpet with a map of Syria on it. Fun! <html><IMG SRC="http://dcollections.oberlin.edu/utils/ajaxhelper/?CISOROOT=kingcrane&CISOPTR=77&action=2&DMSCALE=10&DMWIDTH=512&DMHEIGHT=398&DMX=0&DMY=0&DMTEXT=&DMROTATE=0" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 3em; margin-right: 1em;"></html> But then the hard part begins. Looking over the record of local sentiment you've accumulated, you discover that the locals themselves are divided on a number of crucial issues. Among the petition's you've received are those: * For United Syria * For Separate Palestine * For Separate Palestine under British... * For Autonomous Palestine within Syrian State * For Independent Greater Lebanon * Against Independent Greater Lebanon * For Autonomous Lebanon within Syrian State * For Inclusion of Bokaa with Damascus * For Inclusion of Bokaa with Lebanon * For Inclusion of Cilicia within Armenian State * For Inclusion of Cilicia with Syrian State * For Absolute Independence of Syria * For Independence of Iraq (Mesopotamia) * For Independence of ail Arab Countries * For Democratic Kingdom * For Emir Feisal as King * For Democratic Representative Government * For Guarding of Rights of Minorities * For Arabic to be Official Language * For Abolition of Foreign Capitulations * For Autonomy of all Provinces of Syria Whoa. This is getting tricky. Better stop and mull things over before you make any [[Hard Decisions]].<html><IMG SRC="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8600/16715394712_4f64b081d6_b.jpg"></html> Let's start with the biggest hard decision first. Mesopotamia and the Levant have long histories as separate geographic regions, divided by a large swath of desert. But they also share undeniable cultural ties. And, according to many, a shared Arab identity. Do you choose to [[Unite Syria and Mesopotamia]] into a single state or [[Separate Syria and Mesopotamia]] into independent states?<html><IMG SRC="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8600/16715394712_4f64b081d6_b.jpg"></html> Good decision! The creation of a large and united state thrills Arab nationalists everywhere. It does not immediately succumb to vicious internal struggles between rival power centers in Baghdad and Damascus. Or find itself embroiled in conflict with threatened neighbors like Egypt and Turkey. Speaking of which, now it's time to determine your new state's border with Turkey. Specifically what to do with the contested region of Cilicia, including the cities of Adana and Alexandretta. Do you [[cede the Arabs Cilicia]] or [[deny the Arabs Cilicia]] and give it to the Turks. <html><IMG SRC="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8600/16715394712_4f64b081d6_b.jpg"></html> Good decision! Future generations of Arab Nationalists and Islamists recognize the sound geographic logic behind your pragmatic decision. Since you're already sub-dividing regions, what about continuing to divide up the regions of Syria and Mesopotamia into smaller ethnic and religious units? Let's start with the Kurds. The mountainous area spanning the northern part of Mesopotamia (largely in and around Mosul province) and the Southeastern part of Anatolia has been known as Kurdistan for centuries due to its large population of Kurds. But the region is also full of Arabs, Turks, Armenians and many smaller Christian minorities. It has economic ties that linked it to the rest of Ottoman Anatolia as well as south to Mesopotamia. The Kurds are divided among themselves by tribal affiliation and language. Many feel a sense of religious solidarity with the Ottoman/Turkish government, enhanced by the murderous campaign against Armenians they recently waged together. Also, oil was recently discovered in this region, making it of acute interest to the Turks and the British alike. Do you choose to [[Create an Independent Kurdistan]] or [[join the Kurdish area with Anatolian Turkey]] or [[join the Kurdish area to the rest of Arab Mesopotamia]]?? <html><IMG SRC="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8600/16715394712_4f64b081d6_b.jpg"></html> Good Decision! The Turkish government will certainly understand the wisdom of your decision and not seek to contest it militarily. Now for another issue on Mesopotamia's northern border. For almost fifty years the predominantly Christian population of Mt. Lebanon has enjoyed French-supervised autonomy within the Ottoman Empire. Many of the Maronite Christians who live there are eager to preserve their independence, while many Syrian nationalists insist this region should be part of Greater Syria. Do you want to [[Give Mt. On the off chance this provokes growing Muslim resentment against the Maronite Christians, leading to a civil war, leading to intervention and de factor occupation by the Syrian government, it really won't be all that different than if you hadn't given Lebanon it's independence anyways. Just one more issue left to resolve! Zionism... A lot of Jewish Zionists want to settle in Palestine in order to found a national homeland there. But a lot of the region's current inhabitants don't want them to. Do you [[Create a new Zionist homeland]] or [[Stop to Zionist migration]]?<html><IMG SRC="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8600/16715394712_4f64b081d6_b.jpg"></html> Good Decision! Sure, [[Small States are Great]]. <html><IMG SRC="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8600/16715394712_4f64b081d6_b.jpg"></html> Good decision! The Turkish government will almost certainly develop a form of inclusive identity that incorporates the residents of their new territory as equals rather than foment decades of unrest with heavy-handed assimilationist policies. Just a few more issues to resolve! With the Kurdish region detached from Mesopotamia, what about the remaining inhabitants? Some are Sunni, others are Shiite. More of the Shiites live in the territory of the former Ottoman province of Basra and more of the Sunnis live in the former Ottoman province of Baghdad, but in a lot of cases they live in the same places, and after all there haven't been that many problems between them in the last century or so. Want to [[create a united Arab Mesopotamia]] or divide it up anyways since [[Small States are Great]]??<html><IMG SRC="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8600/16715394712_4f64b081d6_b.jpg"></html>Good decision! The Arab government will almost certainly develop a form of inclusive national identity that incorporates the residents of their new territory as equals rather than foment decades of unrest with heavy-handed assimilationist policies. Undoubtedly this wise approach will also help smooth over any issues that might arise between Sunnis and Shiites. You have created a cohesive and stable Iraqi State. Syria, it turns out, is also inhabited by people of different religious and ethnic groups. Presumably, though, if you thought Kurds, Sunnis and Shiites in Iraq could live together there's no reason why the Alawites, Druze and Sunnis of the Levant couldn't get along in a [[Greater Syrian State]]<html><IMG SRC="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8600/16715394712_4f64b081d6_b.jpg"></html> Good decision! All it took was some ethnic cleansing and forced migration to get all the Sunnis and the Shiites who were living in the wrong place back where they belong. Fortunately this was carried out in a humane, sensitive manner and no one nurses any grudges. And certainly not the kind of grudges that could be exploited by neighboring Sunni and Shiite powers for any kind of irredentist programs. Or by some kind of secular, pan-Arab nationalist movement that claimed to transcend these doctrinal differences. With that taken care of, why not try the same approach in Syria? Of course, you'll want to create an independent Druze State in the south centered around Jebel Druze and an Alawite state in the coastal mountains around Latakya. And with this many small states floating around, it probably makes sense accommodate the demands of many prominent Allepans by giving them their own state separate from Damascus? Go for it, [[Small States are Still Great]]!<html><IMG SRC="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8676/16528751908_6818a1c987_z.jpg"></html> Good decision! You choose to set aside the matter of who gets Der-el-Zor, the empty stretch of desert between Syria and Mesopotamia, and leave it for the League of Nations to settle at some future date. But there's no putting off the question of what to do with the contested region of Cilicia, including the cities of Adana and Alexandretta. It has a mixed Turkish and Arab population, and is located right between Turkish Anatolia and the Syrian Levant. Do you [[cede Syria Cilicia]] or [[deny the Syrians Cilicia]] and give it to the Turks. <html><IMG SRC="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8600/16715394712_4f64b081d6_b.jpg"></html> Okay, this time your plan didn't quite work. Arab nationalists vehemently opposed it, launching a massive uprising in the name of Arab unity and independence intent on preserving the coherence of Syria. Fortunately, you still get to help decide this new state's borders. Most pressing is the question of what to do with the contested region of Cilicia, including the cities of Adana and Alexandretta. It has a mixed Turkish and Arab population, and is located right between Turkish Anatolia and the Syrian Levant. Just one more follow up. Mt. Lebanon is largely land-locked, without any major ports of its own. It's also a little short on farmland if it wants to be agriculturally self-sufficient. What about creating a [[Greater Lebanon]] by putting giving the Maronite Christians control over Beirut and maybe some land in the Bekaa valley? Or, in light of the fact these regions don't have a Christian majority would you rather just [[stick with just an independent Mt. Lebanon]]? <html><IMG SRC="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8600/16715394712_4f64b081d6_b.jpg"></html> Good Decision! Now on the off chance there are any sectarian conflicts in Mt.
