Avery whips around and tries to grab a hold of him again, but he jumps over the foul line and in a flash of white light - he disappears.\n\nIt takes two seconds to register, and then Avery screams. Her cry goes unnoticed in the chatter of the crowd and the blasting music from the overhead speakers. No one, not any of the other bowlers, not a single staff member, seems to have noticed the sudden disappearance. Avery looks to you, her face white as a sheet, her eyes bulging and her mouth open and gasping like a fish, "We've got to do something! The whiteness is blinding, and as your vision returns to you, you see galaxies of impossible colour swirling around you. You feel like you're rushing forward, faster than anything you've ever experienced.\n\nAnd then everything comes to a stop. \n\nThe feeling is jarring, and you tumble forward, wanting to throw up, but surpressing the need. You take a deep breath and slowly look up.\n\nAvery is beside you, looking slightly green in the face. There's no sign of Kid. You're in what seems like a forest of giant bowling pins. They shift gently in the breeze, rocking back and forth and phasing through each other as they sway. The sky overhead is a gentle lavender, and there are stars - so many stars. \n\nYou blink a few times, not believing your eyes, when you hear a gentle voice, low and maternal, it resonates through you like a warm carress, "Welcome" it says, "to Cosmo's Galaxy."\n\nEND CHAPTER ONE\n\nto be continued...
"Well, the rumor is," says Avery in a hushed tone, "that if you step over the foul line in Lane 14, Gotilda's spirit will grab you and drag you down to the Netherworld."\n\nYou gulp nervously.\n\nKid's got his arms crossed, "No way. Gotilda's story might be a true tragedy, but there's no such thing as spirits or... or Netherworlds. I don't believe any of that."\n\n"It's true, all of it!" pleads Avery.\n\n"T-there's no way!" Kid's picked up his bowling ball, but he's still facing the two of you, "It's just a spooky story!" \n\nHe seems confident, but he's clearly shaken and as he turns to face the lane again, his hand slips and his bowling ball comes tumbling down. It bounces over the gutter and rolls slowly across Lane 14 where it comes to a stop nestled in the space between the far gutter and the wall. \n\nThe three of you stop, blood running cold.\n\nKid turns back around, eyes huge like dinner plates.\n\n A moment passes.\n \n "I'm... I'm not scared."\n \nAvery's hands fly to her mouth, "Don't," she whispers. \n\n"I'm not scared!" Kid repeats. He looks over at his bowling ball, waiting quietly for his someone to retrieve it. He takes a step forward. Avery grabs him by his jacket, "KID STOP IT!" she shrieks. \n\n"L-Let go of me! Avery!!!" \n\nThey both look to you, unspoken plea.\n\n[["Let Kid get the ball."|13A]]\n[["I'll get the ball."|13B]]
Breakfast sounds too good to pass up on a morning like this. You'll see Kid and Avery in class, anyway.\n\nA quick detour to brush your teeth and wash your face and you're headed downstairs. You can hear Mom start to rouse in her room, the ruffling of her too-many comforters and the protesting squeak of an old wooden bedframe. You know she's got another half hour before she's fully awake, so you pop some frozen waffles into the toaster and down a good helping of apple juice straight from the carton as you wait for them to cook. \n\nYou eat your waffles with chocolate syrup and then rinse your plate in the sink.\n\n[[Time to get going|3A]]\n
You might be awake, but your stomach isn't yet - you're sure you'll make it to recess before it starts to grumble.\n\nYou leave through the backdoor, with your hood pulled over your head to shield you from the rain, and you hop the back fence to head to Avery's house.\n\nKid and Avery live on the opposite end of the neighbourhood and sometimes if you leave early enough, you can catch them before first bell. \n\n[[Start walking.|3B]]
Kid looks genuinely hurt, "Well... I'm not... I'm not letting some fake curse scare me away. I'm bowling."\n\nAvery lets out a high pitched whine. Kid's already marching off towards Lane 14.\n\n"Let's stay," she says to you, "we have to make sure nothing happens to him!"\n\nYou nod. Of course.\n\nThe two of you sit in the chairs behind the lane as Kid picks out a ball and begins to bowl. Avery picks at her face anxiously as Kid begins his game. She watches his every turn through the gaps in her fingers pressed over her eyes. You have to admit, you feel tiny waves of panic every time Kid's feet get a little too close to the line.\n\nHe finishes his first game without incident.\n\n"See, I told you guys it was nothing to worry about."\n\nHe enters a new game on the score table, and strides back over to the lane with a newfound confidence. He raises his bowling ball to his chest, swings his arm back slowly, takes three steps forward and - and just as he bowls, his fingers get stuck and he tumbles forward over the line!\n\nIn a flash of light, he disappears.\n\nAvery screams, but her cry goes unnoticed in the chatter of the crowd and the blasting music from the overhead speakers. You look back at Kid and he gives you a thumbs up. Deep breath.\n\nYou look forward, eyes on the pins. You lift the ball to your chest, swing your arm back slowly, and then bowl forward in one quick arch - but just as you're about to release, you feel the tug in your fingers: stuck. You tumble forward and try to catch your balance.\n\nYou barely have time to register the positioning of your feet (well over the line, you just know) before a bright flash encompasses you and [[you feel yourself dissolve.|14BB]]

"LANE 14!" Avery nearly shouts. Kid visibly recoils.\n\n"Lentil, we've been going here for years, how can you not know that Lane 14 is cursed???"\n\n"Cursed?" you echo, looking past her to the corner of the alley - Lane 14 is the last lane in the row, empty, but otherwise completely ordinary in appearance.\n\n"How can a bowling lane be cursed?"\n\nKid pushes his glasses back up his nose, "Well, none of the stories are real, but, I mean... well they are real but there's no such thing as curses but,"\n\nAvery interrupts again, "But the story is, back when Cosmo's first opened - 15 years ago - there was a girl, not any older than us, who used to bowl here every day. Her name was Gotilda and they say she practiced so hard and so long that she developed Super Strength in her bowling arm - she was strong enough to stop a moving car with just one hand!"\n\n"That's, that's not true," Kid chimes in, "she was strong, but human strong. The whiteness is blinding, and as your vision returns to you, you see galaxies of impossible colour swirling around you. You feel like you're rushing forward, faster than anything you've ever experienced - and then every goes dark.\n\nFor a moment it feels like you've ceased to exist - like you're floating, still, in a senseless void. \n\nYou feel your feet drift to the ground and as your eyes adjust to the darkness, shapes begin to take form.
