So you found a zine!\n\nWhat's it called? When entering a zine title, don't enter the subheading, just the name. For example, if the cover of a zine said, "My Awesome Zine: The Backpack Issue", you would just enter "My Awesome Zine". If the issue number is listed, insert a comma after the title, and indicate it with a number sign and the numeral (even if the author wrote "issue one" instead of just "#1"). For example, if somewhere on the cover of "My Awesome Zine" it said "issue seven", the correct format is:\nMy Awesome Zine, #7\n\n<<textinput $title [[Got it!|1]]>>\n
Great! Here's your updated entry.\n\n<<print $title>>\n<<print $creator>>\n<<print $contributors>>\n\nWould you like to change any other entries?\n[[The title.|titlechange1]]\n[[The creator(s).|creatorchange1]]\n[[The contributor(s).|contributorschange1]]\n[[I'm done updating my entry, take me to the next step.|4]]
<<print $pages>>\n<<print $language>>\n<<print $size>>\n<<print $collection>>\n<<print $boxnumber>>\n<<print $foldernumber>>\n<<print $title>>
Great! Does <<print $title>> have a creator or multiple creators? If there are multiple, separate their names with commas. If there isn't a clear creator, write "unknown" in this field.\n\n<<textinput $creator [[submit!|2]]>>\n\n[[Go back|Start]]
You're doing a great job! Just to check in, here's what you've entered so far. Is all of this correct?\n\nTitle: <<print $title>>\nCreator(s): <<print $creator>>\nContributor(s): <<print $contributors>>\n\n[[Yes!|4]]\n[[No, I'd like to change something.|3.5]]\n[[Go Back|2]]\n
Fantastic! Are any contributors listed? Zine contributors are different from zine creators--contributors are people who contributed content like articles, poems, or cartoons to the zine, but aren't necessarily involved in the production, compilation, or distribution of the zine.\n\nSometimes contributors are listed all in one place, usually at the beginning or end of a zine, or around the table of contents. Sometimes, contributors aren't listed at all, either because there aren't any aside from the creator(s), or they're uncredited or only listed in the bylines.\n\nIf there are multiple contributors, separate their names with commas, such as "Donald Duck, Harry Potter". \n\n<<textinput $contributors [[submit!|3]]>>\n\nor...\n\n<<button [[There are no listed contributors|3]]>>\n\n[[Go back|1]]
Do you know the date this zine was published? Enter all of the date information that you can. Use "Month DD YYYY" format if possible, i.e. "May 07, 1996", shortening where necessary. If the writer lists a season, write that and then the year, i.e. "Spring 1996". If you just know the year, write "1996". If you can't find the date, write n.d.\n\nNote: I have often been able to find the date through context within the zine. Things like live show reviews are super useful here--say Band 1 opened for Band 2 at Venue Name, in New York, you can google that and often find the date. If you find a date through this kind of estimation, add a c before it for "circa", i.e. "c. 1996".\n\n<<textinput $date>>\n\nWhere was the zine published? If the location is within the United States, as most of the zines in the Sofia Smith collection are, list the city/town and state, like "Amherst, MA". If not, put the city and country, such as "Melbourne, Australia". If you only know the state or the country it's okay to enter that too. If you don't have any information about where a zine was published, you can leave this field blank.\nHint: Many zines have a return address on the back, or a mailing address in the inside cover.\n<<textinput $placeofpublication>>\n\nWas the zine professionally put out by a publisher? If not, leave this blank.\n<<textinput $publisher>>\n\n<<button [[Submit|6]]>>\n[[go back|5]]
Now it's time to pick a genre for your zine! Try to limit your categorization to one genre, but if needed you can select more than one.\n\nHere are some genres that I've found appear pretty frequently in the collections I've looked at.\n<<checkbox $genre " Music Zines" >>\n<<checkbox $genre " Personal zines" >>\n<<checkbox $genre " Political zines" >>\n<<checkbox $genre " Group Zines" >>\n<<checkbox $genre " Riot Grrrl Zines" >>\n<<checkbox $genre " Magazines" >>\n<<checkbox $genre " 24 hours zines" >>\n<<checkbox $genre " Art zines" >>\n<<checkbox $genre " Compilation zines" >>\n<<checkbox $genre " Other" >>\n\nHere are some genres that I find appear less often, but are listed in Barnard Zine Library's genre guidelines.\n\n<<checkbox $genre " DIY zines" >>\n<<checkbox $genre " Fanzines" >>\n<<checkbox $genre " Literary zines" >>\n<<checkbox $genre " Mamazines" >>\n<<checkbox $genre " Metazines" >>\n<<checkbox $genre " Minicomics" >>\n<<checkbox $genre " One-page-folding zines" >>\n<<checkbox $genre " Program zines" >>\n<<checkbox $genre " School zines" >>\n<<checkbox $genre " Split Zines" >>\n\n<<button [[submit!|5]]>>\n[[go back|4]]\nCheck out Barnard's genre guidelines here: \nhttps://zines.barnard.edu/about/genres\n\n
Almost done with the boring stuff, I promise!\n\nTime for some paratexts. Check off all that apply:\n\nThis zine contains...\n<<checkbox $paratexts "Zine reviews or listings">>\n<<checkbox $paratexts "Lists of contributors">>\n<<checkbox $paratexts "Reprints from other zines">>\n<<checkbox $paratexts "Addresses on back cover (sender & recipient">>\n<<checkbox $paratexts "Letter included with the zine">>\n<<checkbox $paratexts "Personal Stamp designating ownership (e.g., Tinúviel's stamp in her zines)">>\n<<checkbox $paratexts "Ads for other zines">>\n\nHow much did the zine cost? This is often listed on the cover of the zine, or in the inside cover. Write "not listed" if you can't find a price anywhere. <<textinput $price>>\n\nWas the zine addressed to anyone/do you know who it belonged to? For example, if it was stamped with Tinúviel's name, enter Tinúviel, or if it was addressed to Jane Smith, enter that.\n<<textinput $recipient>>\n\n<<button [[submit!|8]]>>\n[[go back|6]]
Just a little bit more boring data entry stuff!\n\nHow many pages is the zine? Include the front and back covers, as well as each side of paper as a page. For example, a single piece of paper folded in half would have four pages.\n<<textinput $pages>>\n\nWhat language is the zine written it? If there are multiple languages, separate with a comma.\n<<textinput $language>>\n\nWhat size is the zine? A full sized zine is the size of an 8.5x11 sheet of paper, a 1/2 size zine is that folded in half width-wise, a 1/4 size is a half size folded in half, etc. Put nonstandard for everything else, and be sure to describe the size of the zine when taking notes on the physical appearance later on (there will be a place to do that!).\n<<radio $size "full size">>\n<<radio $size "1/2 size">>\n<<radio $size "1/4 size">>\n<<radio $size "1/8 size">>\n<<radio $size "nonstandard">>\n\nWhat collection is this zine from? Okay, now for the things that are more interesting/fun!\n\nWhile flipping through the zine, you probably have gotten some idea of what it's about. Talk about the gist of what the zine is about, especially noting anything that is unique/unusual/notable about its contents. This can really vary zine to zine.\nSome examples:\n\n"The author of this zine, frustrated by the current indie music and girl music scenes, writes about girl groups of the 50's and 60's, interspersed with metal bands. Provides interesting history of girl groups."\n\n"Written by a 19 year old girl in Brighton, England. Includes interviews with Ian McKay of Fugazi and Ian Svenonius of Nation of Ulysses."\n\n"'The Summer From Hell/Canada Issue'.\ntwo identical copies in folder--the copy described has 'Tinuviel' stamped in inside cover, the other copy does not."\n\n<<textinput $contentnotes>><<button [[submit!|10]]>>\n

Is there anything notable about the physical zine? Here's a place to talk about stains, the weird shape the zine was cut into, the material of the cover, etc. Separate each description with semicolons--this will help make some of these descriptions searchable later. Try to keep the visual things you tag consistent with each other in terms of the language you use for them. If you have been saying "glossy cover" don't switch to "shiny cover"! \n\nNote: b/w means black and white, two-color cover means the cover was printed using two colors of ink.\n\nAn example of a really simple physical description: \ntwo-color cover ; glossy cover ; b/w\n\nAn example of a description that probably won't be very searchable, but will provide an image of the zine which could be helpful down the line:\nnon-standard size, between 1/4 and 1/2 ; blue cover ; b/w ; one yellow page ; cat hair taped into front page ; blue and silver star stickers on cover ; contains broken rubber band\n\n<<textinput $physicaldescription [[submit!|9]]>>\n\n[[go back|7]]
Are there any zines that this zine mentions? Listing these can be a really helpful practice in mapping zine networks.\n\nList titles this zine is in conversation with, separating them with semicolons.\n\nExample:\n\nFrom Chimps, #2: werevolves ; germ of youth ; kill the robot fanzine ; simba fanzine\n\n<<textinput $otherzines [[submit!|12]]>>
Now it's time for subject tags! These are essentially keywords that will make this listing searchable for people looking for specific zines. This can get really extensive if you want it to--try to stick to 10 tags or under unless there is a lot of ground covered in the zine that it feels super important to tag for. This is for your own good (trust me).\n\nThink about stuff people would be searching, and things specific to this zine and again, try to keep a consistent language in your tags!\n\nExample:\n\n"zine reviews ; music reviews ; indie labels ; music ; the music industry ; writers under 20 ; school ; high school ; Villa Villakula ; Lynda Barry"\n\n<<textinput $subjecttags [[submit!|11]]>>
Congratulations! You've just cataloged a zine.\n\nHere's the information you gathered.\n\nNote: As it stands, the creator of this twine game is too lazy to create a feature that would let you edit this information. I will do this in future, I promise.\n\nTitle: <<print $title>>\nCreator(s): <<print $creator>>\nContributor(s): <<print $contributors>>\nContent Description/Notes: <<print $contentnotes>>\nLanguage: <<print $language>>\nGenre: <<print $genre>>\nPublication Date: <<print $date>>\nPublisher: <<print $publisher>>\nPlace of Publication: <<print $placeofpublication>>\nNumber of Pages: <<print $pages>>\nSize: <<print $size>>\nPrice: <<print $price>>\nPhysical Description: <<print $physicaldescription>>\nRecipient: <<print $recipient>>\nParatexts/Additional Info: <<print $paratexts>>\nSubject Tags: <<print $subjecttags >>\nOther Zines Mentioned/In Conversation With: <<print $otherzines>>\nCollection: <<print $collection>>\nBox Number: <<print $boxnumber>>\nFolder Number: <<print $foldernumber>>\nDoes it Have a Zine Wiki Page?<<print $iszinewiki>>\nIf so, what's the link? <<print $zinewikilink>>\n
Finally, the last step! I promise.\n\nDoes this zine have a Zine Wiki entry? Check on ziniwiki.com.\n\nNote: last time I checked, the search function on Zine Wiki doesn't work--navigate through the alphabetical zine listings linked on the left side of the page.\n\nIs there a zine wiki page? If so, does the page have content? Sometimes, there will be blank Zine Wiki pages.\n\n<<radio $iszinewiki "Yes, with content (link below).">>\n<<radio $iszinewiki "Yes, without content (link below).">>\n<<radio $iszinewiki "Nope.">>\n\nGreat! If there is a Zine Wiki page, copy and paste the link here, even if it has no content. If there isn't one, leave this field blank. <<textinput $zinewikilink>>\n\n<<button [[done!|13]]>>
